Support Women's Heart Disease Awareness: Wear Red on February 1

National Wear Red Day, observed on February 1st, is one component of a national awareness campaign called The Heart Truth, aimed at improving public understanding of women's heart disease risks.  The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute encourages men and women alike to wear red on the 1st of February as an act of national solidarity and to remind people that heart disease is consistently the number one killer of women.

You can participate in Wear Red Day by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, tie, or other clothing item this Friday, and by spreading the word to your friends, colleagues and co-workers.  You can also help prevent heart disease by adopting and sharing the following Ten Commandments For A Healthy Heart, courtesy of The Heart Truth campaign:

  1. "Know your risk factors for heart disease.
  2. Talk to your doctor about reducing your risk of heart disease.
  3. Have your blood pressure checked regularly.
  4. Know your cholesterol numbers.  [These include total cholesterol, HDL or "good" cholesterol, LDL or "bad" cholesterol, and triglycerides.]
  5. Have your blood sugar level checked for diabetes.
  6. Do not smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products.
  7. Eat for your heart health.
  8. Get regular physical activity.  [At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most or all days of the week.]
  9. Aim for a healthy weight.
  10. Know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and the importance of seeking medical help immediately."
