Exercise Benefits Women with Fibromyalgia: New Study

Walking, stretching and simple strength training can significantly reduce the symptoms and improve the functional status of women with fibromyalgia, according to a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.  The benefits of exercise also seem to be significantly enhanced when paired with disease management education.

Approximately 3.4% of women and .5% of men in the U.S. suffer from fibromyalgia -- a disease that causes chronic pain throughout one's body with specific sites of tenderness.  The duration of pain is typically longer than three months, and the causes and mechanisms of fibromyalgia are poorly understood.

In this most recent study, 207 women with confirmed fibromyalgia were randomly assigned to one of four 16-week exercise and/or education groups, and their progress was carefully monitored.  The beneficial health effects of exercise in conjunction with patient education were readily observed by researchers as many as six months after the treatment program was initiated.  Authors of the study say that the study demonstrates the importance of including patient education and appropriate exercise routines in the treatment of people suffering from fibromyalgia.
