Cutting Edge Diabetic Treatment: Physician's Dilemma

As reported by Medical News Today, a recent Duke University report has found that diabetics are not receiving cutting edge treatment due to physician resistance to them.

The researchers found that empirical evidence supports several new treatments on the market such as, insulin pumps and blood glucose monitoring devices allow diabetics to better manage their disease and stick with prescribed treatment regimens. These treatments not only result in lesser pain than older treatments but also prevent or delay the complications to diabetes, including, hypertension, blindness, and end-stage renal disease, among other debilitating outcomes.

The report found however that new treatments are denied to patients, because of the physician’s resistance to them, which may stem from the patients backgrounds which consist of minorities, the elderly, and people of lower socioeconomic status which other studies have shown are frequently not prescribed cutting edge medical treatment. Another factor may be the lack of clinical data of these new treatments to show long term benefits to prove these devices more cost-efficient and effective.

This lack of experience on the part of the physician, the researchers found, may also have a trickle down effect, hindering patients who are prescribed the treatments from using them correctly or to their maximum potential.
